This is the first week we've had in a long time without any snow in the forecast and the break in the weather couldn't come at a better time. Spring gobbler season's almost here. Curtis Taylor is the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Chief, he knows more about turkey hunting than anyone else in the state.

"Spring gobbler season in West Virginia always comes in the fourth Monday in April. This year it's as late as it possibly can be on the 28th. Our season is set to coincide with the peak in incubation and that coincides with the second peak in gobbling because the hens are on the nest."

But that doesn't mean the gobblers are going to stop trying to find a hen to hang out with. In fact, there's still plenty of good hunting a couple of weeks after season opens.

"The third and fourth weeks are sometimes my favorites. A lot of the novice hunters have given up and they don't go, but the intensity of the gobbling that third and fourth week when there are almost no hens available can be very productive." says Taylor.

Curtis is one of the top turkey hunters around, so he knows what he's talking about. But this year, there's a wild card which makes things even more interesting. The crazy weather we've had means turkey hunting will be hard to predict.

"This is going to be a strange year, it was thirty degrees when I got up this morning, it's going to be different. We didn't have an abundant mast condition over most of the state, that is going to have a lot to do with the intensity and length of the reproductive season." says Taylor.

So get you a good spot, be persistent and don't give up if you don't get a gobbler the first week or two of the season. Good luck!
