Students packed the Charleston Civic Center over the weekend with one goal in mind, winning honors in this year's Archery in the Schools tournament. While it's always tough to win in this competition where some of the best shots in the country are competing, this year a twist was thrown in the mix. Krista Snodgrass is the event coordinator and explains the challenges archers faced.

"These kids struggled this year in finding the time to shoot with school being out for multiple reasons, the weather, the water. They had from January 3rd to March 3rd to try to qualify so that helped us, extending when they could qualify."

You can bet these kids put that extra time to good use. In fact, this is one of the biggest tournaments ever in West Virginia.

"Every year we continue to grow. Again this year, the kids had to qualify to come to the state tournament so they have the best of the best competing today. We take the top 6 teams per division-elementary, middle and high school, so it's grades 3-12 and we add 30 individuals that get to come."

That puts some mighty fine shooters toeing the line, and for some, a move up in competition means a little tougher day, but for others, well, their odds improved greatly.

"This year one change has been 6th graders moving up to the middle school classes. in the past, they've shot as elementary. That's been a big change, so we'll see a lot more elementary students getting awards because they're not competing against the older kids."

This is just a great event, a great program, made possible to by countless volunteers giving up their time to help out, not just here, but in gyms across the state, year round.
