Youth Turkey Hunt

Introduce your child to hunting, spring gobbler style.

"I think it will be fun to go turkey hunting for my first time."

My son quinn really likes to hit the woods, but he's usually thinking about catching some trout or maybe getting a buck. This year, he's ready to give spring gobbler's a try.

Quinn McMurtry/Turkey Hunter says:
"Every year, we go out and we deer hunt and I got a shotgun last year for my birthday, so I thought it would be fun to go turkey hunting."

So i guess you could say we're both going to be learning together. Gary sharp is pretty much a turkey expert. He's got some tips for us if we're lucky enough to harvest a nice gobbler.

Gary Sharp/DNR Biologist says:
"Whenever you kill a wild turkey, you can age it by spur length and sometimes by beard lenght. A year old turkey, a Jake, will probably have a short beard, probably 3-5" long, and a spur about 1/2" long.

It's going to grow 1/8" a year, if a spur is 11/2" long, that's as long as it's going to get."

Sounds good to me.

The dnr would like invite parents like myself to take advantage of the
special youth turkey season this saturday and introduce your kids to
hunting... What better way than to spend your time introducing your
children to an activity that you both can enjoy for a lifetime.
