  Bear Population
"This is kind of an interesting situation, biologists thought there might be as many as two adult bears in this den, which would be a first for them. We got here, the sow darted down the hill, another one took off down the hill. We're not sure hold old it is, this one is one year old." Eric Richmond/DNR Bear Biologist says: "After entering the den, we found one of the sows with her and the other adult bear is within a stone's throw of this den, so we may be looking at 1/2 a dozen bears right here in sight of each other. None of them have been tranquilized. Absolutely none." There goes one...You can see her take off down the hill....Less than a minute later...There goes another bear. This is a perfect example of just how imporatant it is to know as much as possible about both the overall bear population and individual bears, too. Biologists have their hands full and sometimes they need the help of the general public to keep these animals safe. Chris Ryan/DNR Bear Biologist says: If a bear becomes so accustomed to getting human food sources and they're coming around people and creating a public safety issue, we have no choice but to manually destroy that animal, we don't have places to put them anymore so we have to put the bear down." By using these gps tracking collars, biologists will be able to find out exactly where the bears are roaming making manageing their population a lot easier.
