Lawmakers expand WVa workplace drug testing

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
Contractors must now certify that their workers are drug-free to win state construction jobs, and West Virginia lawmakers have extended that mandate to county and local projects.



The House of Delegates voted Saturday to send the program's proposed expansion to Gov. Joe Manchin. The Senate passed the measure Friday.

West Virginia requires businesses awarded construction contracts by state agencies to screen workers for alcohol and drug abuse.

While expanding the scope of that law, Saturday's bill also exempts projects worth $100,000 or less. The threshold had been $50,000.

Some Republicans had sought to free projects valued at up to $250,000 from the drug-testing requirements.
