WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATIVE NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Senate passes $11.6B W.Va. budget; House to vote March 20, 2010 12:15 PM CHARLESTON, W.Va. West Virginia state government is poised to spend $11.6 billion during the next budget year. The state Senate voted 29-0 Saturday to pass a compromise budget bill. Of the five senators absent, two paired their uncounted votes. The House of Delegates expected to vote later Saturday. The new budget year begins July 1. The compromise bill relies on $3.7 billion from general tax revenues. That's down $46.2 million from the version passed last year. But overall state spending will rise a half-percent. The increase reflects $82 million in additional lottery proceeds as well as $140 million in federal stimulus-related highway funds. Spending cuts offset those increases. But $150 million from the stimulus also lessened cuts in education and Medicaid. |
