WVa sexual orientation bill shelved for session

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
The House Judiciary Committee will not consider legislation this session adding sexual orientation to West Virginia anti-discrimination laws.

Chairwoman Carrie Webster on Tuesday said her committee expressed sufficient support for the bill. But she questioned its fate afterward.

The Senate-passed measure would expand the Human Rights and fair housing acts. Groups such as the West Virginia Family Foundation opposed the measure.

Webster says the bill was also overshadowed by the gay marriage issue.

A proposal to amend the state constitution died earlier this session. Iowa's Supreme Court has since ruled in favor of same-sex marriage last week. On Tuesday, lawmakers in Vermont overrode their governor's veto to make it legal there.
