WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATIVE NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online WVa House fielding comments on jobless fund bill April 08, 2009 9:33 AM CHARLESTON, W.Va. West Virginia lawmakers expect to hear from employers about legislation that would tax them and workers to shore up jobless benefits funding. The House Finance Committee is holding a Wednesday public hearing on the Senate-passed proposal to boost unemployment compensation trust fund revenues. The fund aids jobless West Virginians while they seek new work. The bill would levy special assessments on both employers and workers, and increase the tax employers already pay into the fund. The assessments and the initial tax hike would be temporary. The recession has busted funds in 14 other states. West Virginia fears its fund won't last the year without more revenues. House Republicans are recommending tapping the state's emergency reserves instead. |
