WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATIVE NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online WVa House passes Greenbrier gambling bill April 10, 2009 3:23 PM CHARLESTON, W.Va. The rules and tax rates for a casino at The Greenbrier face one more hurdle before the governor gets them. The House has slightly amended and passed a Senate bill to regulate gambling at the historic resort. Senators must now approve those changes. The measure advanced 83-17 Friday would distribute proceeds among state programs and county and local governments. It would also help The Greenbrier recoup employee benefits costs. But critics object to a provision allowing free-play coupons at the state's casinos. Lottery officials say competition elsewhere already offer them to lure gamblers away from West Virginia. The Greenbrier filed for bankruptcy last month. Supporters hope the casino option approved by voters last year will help keep it open. |
