Eagles hatch pair of babies in New River Gorge March 21, 2010 1:02 PM
HINTON, W.Va.
Volunteers say they've spotted two babies in the first documented bald eagle nest in southern West Virginia.
Wendy Perrone, director of the Three Rivers Avian Center, says the babies can be seen through a telescope a quarter of a mile from the nest. The adult eagles built the nest on an island inside the New River Gorge National River near Hinton.
It was discovered in December and, after mating activity was seen in February, volunteers spent 150 hours watching for signs of babies.
Perrone says they were rewarded last week when the female's behavior changed. Since then, volunteers have watched the babies move around the nest and the parents tend to their needs.
