Effects linger from 2008 drought in WVa July 19, 2008 10:41 AM
CHARLESTON, W.Va.
West Virginia's agriculture industry still is feeling the ripples from last summer's drought.
State Department of Agriculture spokesman Buddy Davidson says the federal Farm Service Agency has paid out more than $2 million to state farmers for livestock-related losses and more than $1 million for crop losses.
Cattle experts estimate there are 10,000 fewer mother cows this year compared with the year before, resulting in a lot fewer calves heading to market.
Ed Grafton lost nearly all of the Christmas trees seedlings planted last year on his farm near Flatwoods. This year he planted hundreds more trees to hopefully get the farm back to pre-drought levels.
