Gubernatorial debate set for Monday
October 13, 2008 7:57 AM

Democrat Gov. Joe Manchin and Republican challenger Russ Weeks are ready to square off in their first gubernatorial debate.

Monday's debate at the Clay Center in Charleston is sponsored by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association.

Weeks has made the West Virginia University degree scandal involving Manchin's daughter a major issue in his campaign. Manchin, however, says he had nothing to do with the university's decision to grant his daughter a degree she didn't earn.

Mountain Party candidate Jesse Johnson wasn't invited to participate in Monday night's debate. A judge refused last week to order the association to include him.

All three candidates have been invited to a Sunday debate sponsored by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and The Associated Press.
