Tomblin Says WV May Have Paid Too Much For Routers
February 28, 2013
The controversy over government-purchased Internet routers in West Virginia continues to bubble.
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin announced Thursday that the state may have paid too much to obtain internet routers to improve broadband service.
An audit review by the West Virginia Legislature and United States inspector general for the Department of Commerce found the money used to buy Internet routers wasn't spent effectively.
For example, the Marmet Public Library has a $20,000 high speed router for a single computer.
It was a plan to expand the statewide broadband network by creating Internet hubs at schools, libraries and other community institutions.
“You know there are some sites that definitely need a router of this size and can fully use it,” said Rob Alsop, the governor’s chief of staff. “We need to go out given the questions that have been raised and justify those sites. And then there are a few issues we need to fix on site so the tax payers know we're spending their taxes dollars appropriately.”
The governor's office is planning on visiting the sites of these routers throughout the next month to figure out where changes need to be made.
