T.i.: Feeling Like An Underdog
NEW YORK
T.I. may be at the top of the music charts. But he still feels like he doesn't get the respect he should. He says even though his albums have gone platinum, it doesn't seem to him like people expect the best from him. He says people seem to think: "He's not going to do this much, he's not going to do that good, I don't believe he'll do that well," then end up surprised when he succeeds. He says that makes him believe that "no matter how big" he gets, he will always be "the underdog." The rapper made the comments before appearing at the 30th birthday celebration for the apparel company Diesel in New York.

O.j. Simpson: Feels He Was Railroaded
LOS ANGELES
His lawyer says O.J. Simpson believes he got a raw deal from the jury in Las Vegas that convicted him of kidnapping and armed robbery. Attorney Yale Galanter says he and fellow lawyer Gabriel Grasso have spent time with Simpson since his conviction earlier this month. Galanter says having heard what jurors have said since the trial, Simpson is hopeful about winning a new trial on appeal. The lawyer says the former football star "knows that he was absolutely railroaded." Coming in for special criticism by the defense is jury foreman Paul Connelly. He suggested that Simpson should have gone to prison 13 years ago for the knife killings of his ex-wife and a friend of her. Galanter says Connelly "should not have been on that jury."

O.j. Simpson: Formally Seek New Trial
LAS VEGAS
O.J. Simpson's lawyers have formally asked for a new trial for the former football star. In paperwork filed in Las Vegas Friday, the defense team cites judicial errors and insufficient evidence as reasons to give Simpson another shot in court. The paperwork seeking a new trial claims the judge made poor decisions during jury selection, limited the cross-examination and gave improper instructions to the jury. The request goes before Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass, who handled the trial. If, as expected, she rejects the request, there will likely be another appeal, this one to the Nevada Supreme Court.

O.j. Simpson: Co-Defendant Seeks New Trial, Too
LAS VEGAS
The man who was convicted along with O.J. Simpson on those kidnapping and armed robbery charges in Las Vegas is seeking a new trial, too. Attorneys for Clarence "C.J." Stewart say their big complaint is that their client was forced to be tried alongside Simpson in the case. They had asked the judge to separate the two case, feeling that any bias against Simpson might rub off on Stewart. Attorney Brent Bryson also claims the jury foreman was guilty of misconduct for saying he thought Simpson should have been given a life sentence for murder. Jury foreman Paul Connelly has disputed that interpretation of his post-verdict comments.

Chihuahua Again Top Dog At Box Office
LOS ANGELES
Can a talking dog help people forget about all the bad news coming from Wall Street these days? No one can be sure, but the latest box office numbers sure make it seem that way. "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" is the nation's number-one movie for the second straight week. But more than that, a Disney movie studio exec says there are reports that a lot of adults are going to see the movie. That is, adults without children in tow. Of course, lacking numbers to back that up, we do have numbers that support the film's number-one status: $17.5 million dollars over the weekend, with a 10-day total of $52 and a-half million. The number-two movie is "Quarantine," with $14.2 million, followed by "Body of Lies," which took in $13.1 million, despite a star-studded cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.

`The Express' Running Slowly At Box Office
LOS ANGELES
Are you ready for some football? If that question was being asked among those going to the movies this past weekend, the painfully obvious answer was: no. The new film "The Express" had a pretty weak opening. The film is about Ernie Davis, the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy, given to the top star in college football. Rob Brown plays Davis in the film, which also stars Dennis Quaid. The film came in a disappointing sixth with just $4.7 million dollars in box office money taken in.

Tim Montgomery: Former Track Star Sentenced
NORFOLK, Virginia
Former track star Tim Montgomery has been sentenced to five years in prison. He was sentenced Friday in Virginia under a plea bargain in which he copped to charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of more than 100 grams of heroin. Montgomery will serve the five-year term after he completes a four-year prison sentence he's serving for a check-fraud conspiracy in New York. Montgomery won Olympic gold in the 400-meter relay at the 2000 games and a silver in the same event in '04. But a doping scandal wiped his achievements from the record books.

Magic Johnson: Speaks Out Against Talk Show Hosts
MINNEAPOLIS
Magic Johnson is upset that a pair of talk-show hosts have accused him of faking AIDS. But he says he doesn't want to see the hosts fired. Chris Baker and Langdon Perry of KTLK in Minneapolis made the remarks during Baker's conservative radio show last week. After Johnson condemned the statements, the station said it regretted what it called "some offhand remarks" by the two. Johnson says the remarks were "so stupid," but stops short of calling for the hosts to be fired. He says he "would rather they educate their audience." Speaking of education, Johnson was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1991, but doesn't have AIDS.

Angry Crowds Turn Out At Mccain Rallies, Candidate Tries To Quiet Them
LAKEVILLE, Minn.
Usually a candidate's biggest job is to rile up his supporters. Lately, John McCain has had to work to keep some of his backers in check. At recent rallies, some supporters have been highly personal in their comments about Barack Obama, calling him "traitor," "terrorist" and "liar." There have even been reports of someone shouting out "off with his head." McCain's effort to quiet such talk have met with mixed results. He himself was booed when he described his Democratic opponent as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

John Lewis Comments Rais Raise Issue In Campaign
WASHINGTON
It was a strong statement from a civil rights veteran and it has been met with a strong reaction from John McCain's camp. Congressman John Lewis says the negative tone of McCain's campaign reminds him of the hateful atmosphere that segregationist Gov. George Wallace fostered in Alabama in the 1960s. In a statement issued over the weekend, Lewis said McCain and running mate Sarah Palin were "sowing the seeds of hatred and division." Republican candidate John McCain calls Lewis' remarks "shocking and beyond the pale." And the Obama campaign said the candidate doesn't believe that what McCain has said on the campaign trail compares to Wallace and his segregationist policies. Recently, McCain and his running mate have toned down their attacks on rival Barack Obama.
