Free tax preparation help

It is one thing if you can afford to pay a tax professional to prepare your return, and prefer to avoid the trouble of doing it yourself.

Many people would rather not, or can't afford the luxury. Fortunately, there are a number of programs available to provide free tax help, either in person, or over the phone.

For taxpayers with incomes of $40,000 or less, there's the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program. Many of these sites offer electronic filing as well. The armed services provide tax preparation help to military personnel and their families.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly is provided to those age 60 and up. Many of its volunteers are provided by the AARP Tax-Aide program. It has 9,000 tax assistance sites across the U.S.

The IRS provides help over the phone at 800-829-1040. It has a number of walk-in sites where you can find a more personal approach.
