Watch out for rebate scams

Scammers are always looking for a new angle. Even before Congress passed the economic stimulus package, some would-be identity thieves had already begun to call people trying to get them to reveal financial and personal information. The IRS says the scammers were trying to fool people, telling a lie that they need to provide bank account information over the phone in order to get a rebate check.

The tax agency doesn't collect information over the phone. And it is repeating warnings about e-mails meant to look like they are coming from the agency, asking for personal information to supposedly facilitate tax refunds.

Another new spin has been an e-mail notification advising of an audit. This one provides instructions to click on links to complete forms with personal information. Of course, the idea here is to steal from the unsuspecting. It would be better to simply hit the "delete" button. Sometimes even clicking on a link on one of these bogus e-mails can lead to a malicious download that could damage your computer.
