NBA-SCHEDULE

Celtic Green making Boston Blue...Jazz top Pistons again
The Dallas Mavericks had to erase an 18-point lead against the NBA's worst team Wednesday night before tying the league's longest winning streak of the season.

Jason Kidd had 20 points and nine assists in the Mavericks' 13th consecutive victory _ a 96-87 triumph over New Jersey. Caron Butler and rookie Roddy Beaubois each had 16 points for the Mavs, who trailed 41-23 in the first half before equaling the third-best winning streak in team history.

Dallas won despite little production from Dirk Nowitzki, who missed 13 of his 16 shots in scoring 12 points, 13 below his season average.

Also in the NBA Wednesday, Rudy Gay scored 28 points as Memphis matched the most lopsided win over Boston this season, crushing the Celtics 111-91. O.J. Mayo provided 17 points to the Grizzlies' team-record seventh consecutive road win.

Mehmet Okur and Deron Williams each had 18 points to lead seven Utah players in double figures for a 115-104 triumph at Detroit. The Jazz opened the second quarter on a 14-oh run and coasted to their 10th straight win over the Pistons.

Chauncey Billups scored 25 points and Denver put together a 15-oh spurt in the second half to beat Minnesota 110-102. Chris Anderson added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who won their fourth in a row to remain a game ahead of Utah for the Northwest Division lead.

Kevin Durant's 29 points highlighted Oklahoma City's 98-83 rout of New Orleans. The Thunder also got 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds from Russell Westbrook.

San Antonio was a 97-87 winner over New York behind Manu Ginobili's 28 points. The Knicks clinched a team-record ninth straight losing season.

Gerald Wallace shot 9-for-10 while scoring 28 points in Charlotte's 102-87 win at Philadelphia. Stephen Jackson added 24 points and 10 rebounds to the Bobcats' fourth straight win.

Tyreke Evans recorded his first career triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in Sacramento's 113-90 pounding of Toronto. The Raptors have dropped three in a row and seven of eight.

Miami was a 108-97 winner against the Los Angeles Clippers as Dwyane Wade had 27 points and eight assists. Michael Beasley added 15 points before leaving with a thigh bruise late in the third quarter.


NBA-NUGGETS/KARL

Karl misses game
MINNEAPOLIS
The Denver Nuggets were without George Karl Wednesday in Minnesota as their head coach receives treatment for cancer.

Assistant Adrian Dantley filled in as head coach for the fourth time this season.

Karl is undergoing a rigorous six-week treatment of radiation and chemotherapy after being diagnosed last month with neck and throat cancer. He had surgery on Monday to have a feeding tube inserted into his stomach.

He hopes to be back on the sideline Friday night when the Nuggets travel to New Orleans.


NBA-SIXERS-JORDON

76ers coach dismisses reports
PHILADELPHIA
Philadelphia 76ers coach Eddie Jordan says he's not worried about a newspaper report stating he could be fired soon. The Philadelphia Inquirer cited unidentified sources Tuesday saying that Comcast-Spectacor was ready to fire Jordan, likely after his first season with the team is complete. The 76ers are 23-and-41 with little chance to reach the playoffs next month.


NBA-SUSPENSION

Hollins forced to sit
MINNEAPOLIS
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Ryan Hollins has been suspended for two games after separate run-ins with Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki and DeShawn Stevenson on Monday.

Hollins punched Stevenson while boxing him out on a free throw in the second quarter. He then struck Nowitzki in the head with his left forearm late in the fourth quarter, drawing a Flagrant-2 foul and an ejection.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL-CONFERENCE FINALS

Montana, Robert Morris head to NCAAs
Montana and Robert Morris are the latest schools to earn a berth in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Anthony Johnson led Montana to a wild 66-65 comeback win over Weber State in the Big Sky title game, scoring 34 of his career-high 42 points in the second half. Johnson scored the Grizzlies' final 21 points, including a go-ahead bucket in the closing seconds.

Weber State led by as many as 22 but shot 7-for-25 in the second half.

Robert Morris advanced by winning the Northeast Conference tournament final for the second straight year, downing Quinnipiac 52-50. Freshman Karon Abraham scored 16 points to lead the Colonials.


COLLEGE BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE

Hoyas advance to Big East quarterfinals
NEW YORK
No. 22 Georgetown has moved into the Big East tournament quarterfinals with a 69-49 pasting of South Florida.

Jason Clark and Greg Monroe each scored 16 points for the Hoyas, who will face third-ranked and top-seeded Syracuse on Thursday.

Cincinnati, Marquette and Notre Dame also reached the Big East quarterfinals.

Texas, Texas Tech, Nebraska and Oklahoma State were first-round winners in the Big 12 Conference tournament.

Opening-round winners in the Conference USA tourney include Houston, Tulsa, Central Florida and Southern Miss.

Air Force earned a first-round triumph in the Mountain West tournament.

Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Southeast Louisiana and Sam Houston State have moved into the second round of the Southland Conference tourney.

Oregon advanced to the second round of the Pac 10 tournament.

Cal State-Fullerton and Cal Poly won their first-round games in the Big West tournament.

Maryland-Eastern Shore was a first-round winner at the MEAC tourney before Morgan State and Delaware State earned spots in the conference semifinals.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Grambling pulled out first-round victories in the Southwest Athletic Conference tournament.


COLLEGE FOOTBALL-OREGON/ARRESTS

Masoli faces burglary charge
EUGENE, Ore.
Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is facing a burglary charge in connection with a theft at a campus fraternity house in late January.

The Lane County district attorney's office says Masoli and former Oregon receiver Garrett Embry were each charged Wednesday with one count of burglary in the second degree. They're scheduled to be arraigned in Lane County Circuit Court on Friday afternoon.

Masoli helped lead the Ducks to the Pac-10 Conference title and a Rose Bowl berth last season.


NHL-SCHEDULE

Blackhawks catch Sharks ... Caps in OT... Sabres pass Senators
The Chicago Blackhawks have grabbed a share of the NHL's Western Conference lead on the strength of Patrick Sharp's goal-scoring ability.

Sharp scored at 2:08 of overtime to lift the Hawks past the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in Chicago. Sharp opened the scoring just 2:34 into the game before netting his 21st goal of the season, leaving the Blackhawks tied with San Jose at 93 points.

The NHL slate includes Washington's 4-3 overtime win against Carolina, which gives the Capitals a league-best 99 points. Tomas Fleischmann furnished the game-winner at 3:20 of the extra session after Mike Green scored twice for the Caps.

Tyler Myers scored a goal and set up three others as Buffalo topped Dallas 5-3 to take a two-point lead over Ottawa for the Northeast Division lead. Myers assisted on Thomas Vanek's tally, which snapped a 3-3 deadlock midway through the second period.

Rob Niedermayer, Jamie Langenbrunner and Brian Rolston each had a goal and assist as New Jersey doubled up the New York Rangers 6-3. The Devils never trailed in winning for only the fourth time in 12 games.

Adrian Aucoin scored the game-winner as Phoenix downed Vancouver 4-3 in a shootout. Lee Stempniak scored twice in regulation before providing one of the Coyotes' four shootout tallies.


NHL-HEAD HITS

GMs have head-hits proposal
NHL general managers have developed the framework for a new rule that punishes hits to the head.

The new rule would allow referees to assess a minor or major penalty for blindside hits targeting the head. It must be approved by the competition committee and has not yet been given a specific name.


NHL-THRASHERS/CHELIOS

Thrashers call up Chelios
ATLANTA
The Atlanta Thrashers have a newcomer in 48-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios, who was recalled Wednesday.

The 11-time All-Star has played in more games than any other American-born NHL player, and he joins the Thrashers after getting five goals and 17 assists in 46 games with Chicago of the AHL.


MLB-SPRING TRAINING NEWS

No more for Nomar
FORT MYERS, Fla.
Nomar Garciaparra has retired as a member of the Boston Red Sox, signing a one-day contract with his former team and announcing he's ending his 14-year career. The shortstop and 1997 American League MVP played parts of nine seasons in Boston, winning batting titles in 1999 and 2000. The six-time All-Star had a .313 career average with 229 home runs and 936 RBIs.

In other major league news Wednesday:

_ Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly says the team has made overtures about him eventually becoming Joe Torre's permanent replacement as manager. Mattingly said the word manager was brought up in a meeting with team executives, but he added "nothing definitive" was said or done.

_ Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge faced hitters for the first time since offseason surgeries on his right elbow and right knee. Lidge threw 21 pitches at the team's training complex in Clearwater, Fla.


NFL-NEWS

Witherspoon to Tennessee
The Tennessee Titans have agreed to an $11 million, three-year contract with Will Witherspoon as they revamp their linebacking corps.

Witherspoon was released by the Philadelphia Eagles last week after being acquired from St. Louis in a trade last October.

General manager Mike Reinfeldt says Witherspoon likely will play outside linebacker.

In other NFL news:

_ Derek Anderson has apologized to Cleveland fans after calling them "ruthless," and adding they "don't deserve a winner" following his release from the Cleveland Browns. Anderson was let go by the Browns Tuesday, ending an uneven five-year stint.

_ Wide receiver Derrick Mason has agreed to a two-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens after catching 73 passes for 1,028 yards for them last season. Mason's future with the team appeared unclear after the Ravens obtained free agent wideout Donte Stallworth and traded for wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

_ Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson will visit with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday. The Vikes are in need of another running back since backup Chester Taylor signed with the Chicago Bears.

_ The Bengals are trying to reach a deal with free agent receiver Antonio Bryant, who visited Cincinnati Tuesday but left without an agreement. The 29-year-old Bryant had career highs with 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns for Tampa Bay in 2008, but was slowed by knee problems last year.


WNBA-JONES

Jones giving WNBA a shot
TULSA, Okla.
Former sprinter Marion Jones is pursuing a new career. The disgraced Olympian has signed a contract with the WNBA's Tulsa Shock.

Jones was the starting point guard on North Carolina's national championship team in 1994. She was drafted by Phoenix in 2003, but never played in the WNBA.

Jones blossomed into a track and field star at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, but later was stripped of her five medals after admitting in 2007 that she took a performance-enhancing drug before the games.
