GOLF-BRITISH OPEN

Norman is by himself at the top
SOUTHPORT, England
As improbable as it sounds, Greg Norman is the leader after three rounds of the British Open.

The 53-year-old, part-time golfer from Australia managed to shoot a 2-over-par 72 on an extremely windy day at Royal Birkdale. At 2-over for the tournament, the Shark holds a two-stroke lead over defending champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland, who also carded a 72, and 36-hole leader K.J. Choi of South Korea, who signed for a 75.

Englishman Simon Wakefield matched par 70 and is 5-over after 54 holes. He'll play with Choi tomorrow in the second-to-last group off the first tee, just ahead of Norman and Harrington.

Americans Ben Curtis and Anthony Kim are in a group of golfers tied for fifth place at plus-7. Curtis won the Claret Jug in 2003.

Norman, who married former tennis star Chris Evert three weeks ago, is trying to become by far the oldest winner of a major championship. Record-holder Julius Boros was 48 when he captured the 1968 PGA Championship.

GOLF-PGA

Coles has the lead
MILWAUKEE
Gavin Coles is the clubhouse leader late in round three of the PGA's U.S. Bank Championship. He's 11-under-par after carding a 2-under 68.

Jon Mills, George McNeill and Ken Duke are safely in at minus-10 after shooting 64 and 66 and 68, respectively.

GOLF-LPGA

Wie DQ'd
SPRINGFIELD, Ill.
Michelle Wie finished round three of the State Farm Classic alone in second place but won't be playing the final 18 holes. After shooting a 5-under-par 67, she found out she'd been disqualified for failing to sign her scorecard after Friday's second round. The 18-year-old appeared to have been crying when she met with reporters, telling them she made a mistake and doesn't know how it happened. Wie is playing a part-time schedule while attending Stanford,

Yani Tseng is the leader after 54 holes. A 6-under-par 64 dropped her to 18-under for the tournament. That's two strokes better than Katie Futcher, who also signed for a 66.

GOLF-CHAMPIONS

Chasing Quigley in Minnesota
BLAINE, Minn.
First-round leader Dana Quigley is on the front nine for round two of the Champions Tour stop in the Twin Cities. He opened with a 10-under-par 62 yesterday.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Yanks and A's lead off
Today's full major league schedule got started in New York, where the Yankees are hosting an Oakland Athletics team looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Red Sox are looking to avenge last night's 11-3 shellacking at the hands of the AL West-leading Angels this afternoon in Anaheim. The Halos' third straight win helped then open a seven-game bulge over the A's in the division race.

Also this afternoon, it's the Seattle Mariners entertaining the Cleveland Indians.

Tampa Bay opened its second half of the season last night by snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 win against the visiting Blue Jays. That victory, coupled with Boston's loss, put the Rays back on top of the AL East, a half-game better than the Bosox. Tampa Bay will entertain Toronto as part of this evening's schedule.

Elsewhere under the lights, it'll be Detroit at Baltimore, Kansas City at the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota home to Texas.

There are three afternoon starts on the National League schedule: San Diego at St. Louis, Philadelphia at Florida and Milwaukee at San Francisco.

Tonight in the senior circuit: the Mets will try to rebound after having their 10-game winning streak snapped last night in Cincinnati, the Chicago Cubs are at Houston, Atlanta hosts Washington, Pittsburgh plays at Colorado and the Dodgers are at Arizona in a matchup of NL West co-leaders. L.A. caught the Diamondbacks with last night's 8-7, 11-inning victory.

TENNIS-SERENA WILLIAMS

Serena Williams has knee injury
STANFORD, Calif.
Top-seeded Serena Williams injured her left knee and retired from the Bank of the West Classic while trailing during the second set of her semifinal match against qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak. She's the third singles player on the U.S. Olympic women's tennis team with a knee injury.

Williams' sister Venus and Lindsay Davenport have already pulled out of next week's East West Bank Classic in Carson, California, with right knee injuries.

Serena Williams struggled from the start against the 85th-ranked Wozniak. She first called for the trainer when trailing 5-2 in the first set. She got the knee heavily taped and came out to finish the set, but appeared to struggle.

Wozniak held serve to win the set and won 11 straight points to take a 3-1 lead early in the second. Williams appeared to injure the knee further while stretching for a backhand in the fifth game of the set and walked off the court.

NFL-REDSKINS

Redskins rookies signed, sealed and delivered
ASHBURN, Va.
The Redskins and rookie Fred Davis have agreed to a 3.5 million-dollar, four-year contract on the day before training camp opens. He's a 6-foot-4, 247-pound tight end out of Southern California.

Inking the 48th overall choice in April's draft means Washington has deals with all 10 of its picks.

NHL-ISLANDERS

Islanders agree with Nielsen
NEW YORK
Danish center Frans Nielsen has agreed to a four-year, 2.1-million-dollar contract with the New York Islanders. He was drafted by the Islanders in the third round of the 2002 draft and has three goals and two assists in 31 career NHL games.

IRL-POLE QUALIFYING

Penske goes 1-2 at Mid-Ohio qualifying
LEXINGTON, Ohio
Helio Castroneves has captured the pole for tomorrow's IRL Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio.

New teammate Ryan Briscoe qualified second, giving Penske Racing its first front-row sweep since Castroneves won the pole and then-teammate Sam Hornish Junior took the outside spot at Kentucky Speedway in 2006.

They were followed by Marco Andretti, IndyCar newcomer Justin Wilson and Tony Kanaan .

Points leader Scott Dixon, who has a series-leading four wins and the IndyCar Series points lead, will start sixth.

CYCLING-TOUR DE FRANCE

Spain's Freire wins Stage 14, Evans keeps yellow jersey
DIGNES-LES-BAINS, France
Sprint specialist Oscar Freire of Spain has won the 14th stage of the Tour de France, but Australia's Cadel Evans keeps the yellow jersey.

Freire prevailed in a sprint at the end of a 120.9-mile trek in hot weather. Today's stage featured some small climbs in the last day before three punishing stages in the Alps.

Evans defended a 1-second lead over Frank Schleck of Luxembourg and a 38-second gap ahead of American rider Christian Vande Velde.

The race has been marred this year by three riders kicked out for doping violations.
