November 20, 2009 10:32 PM

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
Freshman forward Marshawn Powell scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Arkansas held off Appalachian State 81-72 in overtime Friday night.

Josh Hunter's 3-point basket with 5.6 seconds left in regulation tied it 68-68 after Arkansas walk-on Stephen Cox missed two free throws with 21 seconds left. Arkansas' Rotnei Clarke's off-balance 3-pointer missed as time expired.

But Powell continued his hot play in the extra period, hitting a 3-pointer at the 4:40 mark. His steal with 1:37 left preserved a six-point lead.

The Razorbacks outscored Appalachian State 13-4 in overtime.

Powell, who had double-doubles in his first two games, scored three crucial baskets in the final five minutes.

The Mountaineers held a brief second-half lead after Arkansas led by 20 points in the first half and 38-23 at halftime.
