HOLMES HOLDS 36-HOLE LEAD AT 95TH WEST VIRGINIA AMATEUR
The Old White, TPC Show It’s Teeth Allowing Just One Round Under Par
(White Sulphur Springs) As severe weather rolled in during the overnight hours it looked as if there was going to be a good chance it was going to play a major part in today’s second round of the 95th West Virginia Amateur Championship. Luckily the storm clouds stayed east and players were greeted with blue skies and sunshine for the duration of their second round, which was contested on The Old White, TPC. The C.B. McDonald designed course, which will play host to The Greenbrier Classic in just a few weeks, gave the players all they could handle as only one player was able to post an under par round for the day. Playing a full stroke harder than yesterday’s opening round on The Meadows Course, The Old White, TPC was the perfect setting for today’s sprint to make the cut of the low forty players plus ties that will continue play over the next two days of competition.
Wake Forest sophomore, Woody Woodward, found himself sleeping on the lead heading into today’s second round. A two-time State Four-Ball Champion with his brother Jay, Woodward is no stranger to holding that position. On a day that saw many players struggling to hold their position atop the leaderboard, Woodward’s steady play and ability to avoid the big number kept him atop the leaderboard until a costly double-bogey on the par-3 eighteenth placed him in a tie for second with Madison’s, Harry Howell, posting a two-day total of two over par 142. Howell, who began the day one shot back, also played well and never got himself into too much trouble. After an opening nine of three over-par, 37, Howell played steady and finished with a second round total of 74 giving him a two-day total of 142.
Taking charge and firing the only under par round of the day was Huntington’s, Josh Holmes. On a day when many players struggled to find birdies Holmes found five of them, three of which came on his closing nine holes en route to a second round 69. Holmes’ one under-par round was the only sub par round of the day and jolted him up the leaderboard with a two-day total of one over-par, 141. Holmes will now carry a one-stroke lead heading into tomorrow’s third round, which finds exactly forty players advancing through the cut which was made at thirteen over-par, 153. Sitting alone in fourth place is Thadd Obecny II from Wheeling who posted a two-day total of three over-par, 143.
Tomorrow’s third round is set to begin at 8:00AM back on The Meadows Course with the leaders expected to begin around 10:00AM. In addition to claiming the Greenbrier trophy the 2014 Amateur Champion will also receive an exemption into the 2014 Greenbrier Classic. This incredible opportunity is The Greenbrier Classic and Tournament Chairmen (Mr. Justice) commitment to amateur golf in the state of West Virginia.
