Day two of the 101st edition of the West Virginia Boys State High School Basketball Tournament had more great storylines and some heart-thumping finishes.

All four Class A quarterfinals took place along with two more in Class AAA.

The day started with Charleston Catholic advancing with a 54-44 win over Valley. Irish head coach Bill McClanahan is trying to go out a champ in his final season.

The second Class A game of the day went overtime with Clarksburg Notre Dame outlasting Tucker County.
Freshman Jarrod West, the head coach's son for ND, had 28 points. The older West is a former Mountaineer star who is remembered for his big shot against Cincinnati in 1998 to send WVU on to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The game proved to be the last for Tucker's Tom Gutshall, who has over 500 career wins.

The third Class A showdown also went overtime between No. 1 seed Wheeling Central and No. 8 Parkersburg Catholic. Wheeling Central pulled out the win against the Crusaders. A loss would have been the first time ever that a No. 8 had beaten a No. 1 in any of the three classes.

The nighcap of Class A saw Greater Beckley Christian roar back from a 22-point deficit only to fall in the end to Clay-Battelle.The win sends the Cee-Bees to the semifinals for the first time since 1996 when they played for the Class A title.

In the first Class AAA game, Huntington High avenged two regular season losses against George Washington to move on into the final four of the big schools class.

The game marked the last for GW's Jon Elmore, who is bound for VMI next season. He made the most of his opportunity by scoring 40 points.

The other AAA game was a great battle between Hedgesville and Parkersburg South. Hedgesville pulled out the win and will move on to the semifinals. Hedgesville will hope to bring a state title to the Eastern Panhandle for a second straight year after Martinsburg won it last year.

Semifinal Friday starts with a Class AA game between Poca and Bluefield, following by a Class A contest between Catholic and Notre Dame and the first session closes with the other AA semi featuring Westside and Robert C. Byrd.

The evening session starts out with a Class AAA game between Washington and Huntington. The day ends with AAA contenders Hurricane and Hedgesville. Sandwiched between those two games will be the other Class A game between Wheeling Central and Clay-Battelle.

The championships are set for Saturday with AA going at noon, Class A at 2:30 and Class AAA at 7:15.
