2014 Herd Football Schedule Released

Rice, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, FAU to visit Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University’s 2014 football schedule, announced Monday, features six home games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, including four Conference USA dates.

With the Thundering Herd coming off a 10-4 season and Military Bowl victory over Maryland, one of the highlights on the schedule is a rematch of the 2013 Conference USA Championship Game against Rice – this time on the Thundering Herd’s home turf on Nov. 15.

Marshall also entertains C-USA newcomer Western Kentucky in the regular-season finale on Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Friday. Telecast details for that game will be announced at a later date, as will other TV games.

The schedule is tentative, with the possibility that C-USA telecast partners Fox and CBS Sports Network could move selected games to Thursdays or Fridays.

“It’s a very good schedule for us,” said Mike Hamrick, Marshall’s Director of Athletics. “The way it lays out, alternating between home and road games, is a plus. It’s good for our team and our fans. Our home schedule is filled with teams that are projected to be among the best in C-USA, along with the Herd.

“It’s also fan-friendly, with games within driving distance (at Miami and Akron), besides our six home dates.”

Coach Doc Holliday’s Herd opens the season Aug. 30 at Miami (Ohio), the 43rd meeting between the former Mid-American Conference rivals. The home opener is set Sept. 6 – a first meeting with FCS member Rhode Island of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Marshall has two other non-conference games with MAC members – Sept. 13 at home against Ohio in the 58th meeting in what is now the “Battle for the Bell” rivalry – and Sept. 20 at Akron.

The five home games versus FBS opponents are against teams that combined for 39 victories in 2013 – Ohio (7), Middle Tennessee (8), Florida Atlantic (6), Rice (10) and Western Kentucky (8).

“It’s a solid, competitive schedule for us,” Holliday said. “Like last year, we have a bye week between our four non-league games and our Conference USA opener (Oct. 4 at Old Dominion). Then halfway through conference play we have another bye, which balances the schedule.

“We have FAU here, and we go again to FIU. That’s important because of our recruiting presence in Florida and a lot of our players are from down there. Rice, Middle Tennessee and Ohio were in bowls last year, and Western Kentucky won eight and should have been a bowl. Old Dominion won eight games making the move to FBS, too.”

Marshall’s eight conference games include six against East Division foes (Old Dominion, FIU, FAU, Middle Tennessee, UAB and Western Kentucky), with the two crossover games against the West Division -- at Southern Miss and home against defending C-USA champ Rice.

C-USA will play with seven teams in the East and six in the West for one season, before Charlotte becomes the 14th C-USA football member in 2015.

The 2014 Marshall football schedule (tentative; TV, times TBA):

Aug. 30 at Miami (Ohio)
Sept. 13 OHIO
Sept. 20 at Akron
Sept. 27 Bye
Oct. 4 at Old Dominion
Oct. 18 at FIU
Nov. 1 Bye
Nov. 8 at Southern Miss
Nov. 15 RICE
Nov. 22 at UAB
