It was high drama on Thursday evening to start the West Virginia State High School Baseball Tournament at Appalachian Power Park.
The first Class AA semifinal took 10 innings to complete while the second featured a walk-off grand slam to produce victory.
It was Fairmont Sr. topping Bridgeport, 9-6, in that first encounter while Herbert Hoover came back from a three-run deficit to knock off Independence, 7-3, in the nightcap. Check out the highlights.
The wins advance the Polar Bears and Huskies to the championship game on Saturday.
For Fairmont Sr. it will be the school’s sixth championship game (the first five were Class AAA) appearance but the Polar Bears are still in search of a title. Hoover is heading to the championship in Class AA for a second straight year after finishing as runner-up in 2012. The Huskies won the AA title in 2006.
Class A and Class AAA games are Friday. Cabell Midland returns to the AAA final four. Check out a preview of the Knights with Josh Lewis.
Meanwhile, the state mourns the passing of basketball legend Curtis Price.
Also, former WVU head football coach Frank Cignetti is going into the College Football Hall of Fame.
