The 33rd Annual West Virginia Girls State High School Softball Tournament started on Wednesday at Vienna’s Jackson Park near Parkersburg.
One team in each class was eliminated, while three are still alive heading into Thursday’s second and final day.
In Class AAA, Hurricane is in the driver's seat after winning two games on Wednesday. The Lady Redskins will play for the championship Thursday afternoon. They will get the survivor of the elimination game Thursday morning between Jefferson and Wheeling Park. Ripley was the first to be sidelined in the double-elimination affair at the Class AAA level.
In Class AA, defending state champ Wayne has a great shot at another title. The Lady Pioneers will play for the title against the winner of the loser's bracket final between James Monroe and Ritchie County. Petersburg was put out of the tournament with two straight losses.
Buffalo will go for three straight Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bison will play the Wheeling Central-Moorefield winner for the crown. Man was eliminated after two consecutive losses on Wednesday.
Hurricane, Wayne and Buffalo must be beaten twice Thursday for the opponent to capture the title in the double-elimination affair.
