WVC Basketballfrom Eyewitness News Online UC Gets Upset Win; WV State Endures Upset
Upsets were the story in the on-campus games in the final year for the West Virginia Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
The University of Charleston was one of those staging a win over a higher-seeded team. The No. 9 Lady Eagles will move on to the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum after knocking off No. 8 Pitt Johnstown on the road. Meanwhile, West Virginia State's season came to an abrupt end as the No. 6 Lady Jackets were beaten at home by No. 11 West Virginia Wesleyan. UC will oppose No. 1 seed Glenville, who earned an opening round bye, on Wednesday while Wesleyan gets No. 3 Fairmont State, who easily defeated Ohio Valley. The big stunner of the night was No. 13 Alderson-Broaddus topping No. 4 seed Davis & Elkins to earn the school its first trip to Charleston since 1999. Other winners were West Liberty and Shepherd. The men's on-campus games will be played Tuesday. The West Virginia Conference is folding after this school year with league members going to either the newly-formed Mountain East Conference or the Great Midwest. Also Monday was the start of boys sectional tournament action. Capital and Sissonville advanced with wins.
