L FATAL CRASH
THAT'S CORRECT. ROUGHLY 20 MINUTES EARLIER A CALHOUN COUNTY MAN LOST CONTROL AND HIT THE SIDE OF THE BRIDGE DUE TO ICE.

DEPUTIES DID NOT IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE VICTIM'S NAME. WITNESSES SAID THE INJURED BOY APPEARED TO BE AROUND 13 AND THE ADULT MALE DRI VER WAS AROUND 45. IT WAS UNCLEAR IF THE DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS HAD SALTED THE BRIDGE PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT BUT IT WAS VERY SLICK. D-O-H OFFICIALS WARN THAT EVEN ON WHAT APPEARS TO BE A DRY DAY BRIDGE SURFACES CAN BE FROZEN WHEN IT'S THIS COLD.

GERM TESTING
IT'S UNAVOIDABLE. TOUCHING THINGS THROUGHOUT THE DAY THAT MAY NOT BE CLEAN.

    THE RESULTS DIRTY EVERYDAY SURFACES.

Think how often you touch things in a given day. nats

    SOT

"You just need to take precautions."

    TRACK

We teamed up with Dr. Sanjai Nagendra, the Medical Director of Memorial Medical Center's Laboratory, and his team to test every day surfaces to see how unsanitary our world is. They gave us several swab kits and showed us how to use them. We then set out to locations in Springfield, sometimes using our cell phone, to film.

We start with Walmart. You might want to wipe down the handle on you shopping cart. After we we swabbed our cart, Memorial's lab found what is called gut flora, bacteria from one's stomach and intestines.

    SOT CG

"There are thousands and thousands of bacteria in your gut. So, if you don't wash your hands, those bacteria can get everywhere."

    TRACK

How often do you get a fountain drink from a convenience store? After we swabbed the nozzles at Huck's in Springfield, the lab found E. coli.

    SOT

"There are certain strains of E. coli that can harm people, give them diarrhea, and other types of illnesses."

    TRACK

Then, there's your cell phone. We randomly found Steve at Washington Park and asked him if we could swab his phone.

    SOT

"What do you think the results are going to be?

    "I would say moderately funky."

    TRACK

And Steve would be right. Gut flora was found.

Do you use an elevator? We swabbed these elevator buttons at the Hampton Inn in Springfield. Again, Memorial's lab found gut flora present.

It was the same result of an ATM at the Vinegar Hill Mall in Springfield. So remember, when you touch here, you are touching bacteria from other people's stomach and intestines.

    SOT CG

"So we just went to lunch. Let me get out the change I received."

    TRACK

What was on that dollar bill? Mouth flora.

    SOT

"In the spit, in the saliva. There are thousands of bacteria there. A lot of the bacteria, you see strep throat you can get from another person, but also viruses."

    TRACK

And Memorial's lab didn't test for viruses. So, there are potential viruses on all these surfaces. (VID-EE-YA SUN-RASHIN)Dr. Vidya Sundareshan is a professor of infectious diseases at the SIU School of Medicine. She's not surprised by the results.

    SOT CG

"A lot of bacteria can survive on inanimate surfaces for a long time. Some of them are pathogenic, which means they have the potential to cause diseases."

    TRACK

That's why using hand sanitizers and washing your hands and doing it often is so important. Use warm water and soap. Because no matter how often you do, others are not, and that is making our world?

    SOT

    "Quite unsanitary."

NEW CHOLESTEROL GUIDELINES
IF YOU'RE NOT ON MEDICINE TO LOWER YOUR CHOLESTEROL YET, YOU MIGHT BE SOON.

THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION HAS ISSUED NEW TREATMENT GUIDELINES THAT FOCUS ON RISK FACTORS RATHER THAN JUST CHOLESTEROL LEVELS.

IF YOU'VE HEARD IT ONCE FROM YOUR DOCTOR, YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD IT A THOUSAND TIMES -- KNOW YOUR NUMBERS.

BLOOD PRESSURE SHOULD BE 120 OVER 80 OR LESS

YOUR BMI SHOULD BE UNDER 25

AND HOW 'BOUT YOUR BAD CHOLESTEROL LEVEL ?

    THAT SHOULD BE UNDER 100.

BUT NEW GUIDELINES RELEASED TODAY BY THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION -- AND THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY -- SAY THAT LAST NUMBER ISN'T SO IMPORTANT ANYMORE.

    WHY?

THEY SAY REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOUR NUMBERS ARE..... IN MOST CASES..... YOU MIGHT NEED TO BE ON A CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING STATIN DRUG.

The new guidelines greatly expand the number of Americans that would be eligible to receive statin drugs.

We would estimate from about 36 million previously to as many as 72 million now.

SO WHAT ARE THE NEW GUIDELINES?

    THE FIRST TWO ARE SIMPLE.

IF YOU HAVE HEART DISEASE -- YOU GET A STATIN REGARDLESS OF YOUR CHOLESTEROL NUMBERS.

HAVE DIABETES, TYPE 1 OR TYPE 2? - YOU GET A STATIN TOO.

THE OTHER TWO ARE A BIT MORE COMPLEX --

IF YOU HAVE GENETICALLY HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND YOUR BAD CHOLESTEROL IS OVER 190 - YOU MAY GET A PRESCRIPTION...

AND IF YOU'RE BETWEEN 40 AND 75, AND YOUR TEN-YEAR RISK OF HEART DISEASE IS OVER 7-AND-A-HALF-PERCENT YOU'LL GET ONE TOO...
