COUNTERFEIT COUPONS
MILLIONS OF US ARE STRETCHING OUR DOLLARS WITH COUPONS FOUND ONLINE AND IN NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES.

BUT A NEW COUPON SCAM IS ON THE RISE.. AND IT'S COSTING US ALL..

WE USE COUPONS TO SAVE MONEY. BUT IRONICALLY: COUPONS ARE NOW AT THE HEART OF A NEW SCAM THAT IS COSTING U-S COMPANIES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

"For every coupon successfully counterfeited it costs the manufacturer one million dollars."

THESE COUNTERFEIT COUPONS ARE USUALLY SOLD ON THE INTERNET.

"Customers went online and were the winning bidder on some Internet auction."

ONCE THE SITE HAD CONTACT INFORMATION - CONSUMERS WOULD BE MESSAGED OR EMAILED ASKING IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO BUY A LARGE AMOUNT OF COUPONS.

"So the initial online auction was just basically for them to find people that they could sell a large quantity of coupons to at one time."

POSTAL INSPECTORS LEARNED THE COUPONS WERE FAKES.

"Initially, these counterfeits will scan and be accepted at your local retail company but it is costing the manufacturer money and in turn costing the consumer money."

IN FACT THE COUPON INFORMATION CORPORATION SAYS COUPON FRAUD IS COSTING MANUFACTURERS HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR.

MANUFACTURERS SAY THEY ARE FORCED TO PASS ALONG THESE LOSSES BY RAISING THE PRICES OF THEIR GOODS.

"The manufacturers have put retail establishments on notice that they will no longer reimburse them."

BOTTOM LINE: NO CONSUMER SHOULD EVERY PAY FOR A COUPON.

"People use coupons to save money and in this case you might be actually wasting your money."

POSTAL INSPECTORS SAY, USE COUPONS YOU FIND IN NEWSPAPERS, MANUFACTURERS' WEB SITES OR THEIR AUTHORIZED COUPON DISTRIBUTOR.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD COUPONS FROM INTERNET FORUMS.

SMART HOLIDAY SHOPPING
THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON BEGINS IN A COUPLE WEEKS.

AND FOR SOME, THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON MAY LEAD TO OVERSPENDING AND ADD UP TO A LESS-THAN-HAPPY NEW YEAR.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SMARTER HOLIDAY SPENDING.

MANY AMERICANS WON'T START THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH A CLEAN FINANCIAL SLATE. IF CREDIT CARD DEBT IS ALREADY MOUNTING, LEAVE THE PLASTIC ALONE.

"Maybe you can't do what you really want to do during the holidays in terms of everything you want to give your kids or your friends, but if you stick with cash your situation at least won't get any worse."

STICKING TO CASH ON HAND REQUIRES A MORE DISCIPLINED APPROACH - AND A BUDGET. IN ADDITION TO GIFTING FAMILY AND FRIENDS, FACTOR IN OTHERS THAT ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED, LIKE TIPS FOR BABYSITTERS AND HAIRDRESSERS.

CREDIT CARD EXPERT BEVERLY HARZOG URGES SHOPPERS TO BE HONEST ABOUT THAT BUDGET -- AND DON'T RELY ON POTENTIAL MONEY LIKE A HOLIDAY BONUS THAT MAY NOT MATERIALIZE.

"Stick with what you know you have in your accounts at the moment, your current cash flow, and plan your budget around that. That way you won't have any unpleasant surprises. The last thing you want is to be in the debt when 2014 rolls around."

IF A LARGE PURCHASE IS GOING ON A CREDIT CARD, MAKE A SMART CHOICE. USE A REWARDS CARD THAT WILL EARN POINTS, MILES OR CASH BACK.

AND RESIST BEING TEMPTED BY THOSE DEALS THAT PROMISE INSTANT SAVINGS BY OPENING A STORE CREDIT CARD. THEY TEND TO HAVE HIGHER INTEREST RATES, MEANING YOU MAY STILL BE PAYING FOR THIS YEAR'S GIFTS, NEXT YEAR.

FOR CONSUMER WATCH, I'M KARIN CAIFA.

NFL BULLYING
IN OTHER SPORTS NEWS...THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS DEFEATED THE MIAMI DOLPHINS LAST NIGHT.

A LOSS COMING ON THE HEELS OF HARASSMENT CHARGES THAT HAVE HIT THE TEAM.

NOW THE TEAM'S OWNER IS TRYING TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SCANDAL.

FOR TWO WEEKS THE MIAMI DOLPHINS HAVE CLOSED RANKS.

BUT LAST NIGHT - THE TEAM'S OWNER FINALLY SPOKE OUT ABOUT THE BULLYING

SCANDAL THAT HAS ROCKED THE BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE.

SOT Stephen Ross / Miami Dolphins Owner

what's going on is really something that couldn't have been a worse

    nightmare.

SECOND-YEAR PLAYER JONATHAN MARTIN LEFT THE TEAM TWO WEEKS AGO - REPORTEDLY

SUFFERING FROM EMOTIONAL DISTRESS AFTER WHAT HE SAID WAS INTENSE BULLYING

AND HAZING BY 9 YEAR VETERAN RICHIE INCOGNITO.

BEFORE THE DOLPHINS' MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME LAST NIGHT, ROSS SAID HE

DIDNT KNOW ABOUT INCOGNITO'S CRUDE TEXT MESSAGES AND VOICE MAILS TO MARTIN

UNTIL THEY CAME OUT IN THE MEDIA - AND NEITHER DID HEAD COACH JOE PHILBIN.

SOT Stephen Ross / Miami Dolphins Owner

We want to get to the bottom of it. We want to hear what the real facts are

    .

ROSS WOULDN'T ADDRESS WHETHER THIS WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENTOR PART OF THE

    NFL'S LOCKER ROOM CULTURE.

THE DOLPHINS SUSPENDED INCOGNITO. HE TOLD FOX THIS WEEKEND HE NEVER INTENDED

    TO HURT HIS TEAMMATE.

SOT Richie Incognito / Suspend Miami Dolphins Player

My actions were coming from a place of love. No matter how bad and how

vulgar it sounds, that's how we communicate, that's how our friendship was.

THE NINE YEAR VETERAN GUARD SAID THE VULGARITY WENT BOTH WAYS. AND PEOPLE

WHO DON'T KNOW THE TWO LINEMAN JUST WOULDN'T GET IT.

SOT Richie Incognito / Suspend Miami Dolphins Player

When the words are put in the context, I understand why a lot of eyebrows

get raised, but people don't know how Jon and I communicate to one another.

YESTERDAY ESPN REPORTED THAT MARTIN WANTS TO PLAY FOOTBALL AGAIN - BUT ISNT

COMFORTABLE DOING IT IN MIAMIWHICH MEANS HE'S EFFECTIVELY DONE FOR THE

    SEASON.

O/C CLOSE: DOLPHINS OWNER STEPHEN ROSS SAID HE WILL MEET WITH JONATHAN

MARTIN AND WANTS TO MEET WITH RICHIE INCOGNITOHE SAID BOTH DESERVE TO BE
