A NEWSPAPER CARRIER SPOTTED THE FIRE AND CALLED 9-1-1 JUST AFTER THREE THIS MORNING . THE FIRE WAS IN A VACANT APARTMENT BUILDING IN THE 800 BLOCK OF WATTS STREET. THE BUILDING, OWNED BY RITA STANLEY, WAS SLATED FOR DEMOLITION AND WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BOARDED UP. IT WAS NOT. FIREFIGHTERS RESCUED A WOMAN WHO WAS HIDING IN THE CLOSET OF ONE APARTMENT. SHE IS NOT CONSIDERED A SUSPECT IN THE ARSON AND WAS NOT INJURED.

24-YEAR-OLD JEFFREY ARTHUR ASKED FOR HOME CONFINEMENT AT HIS MALICIOUS WOUNDING SENTENCING. HE CUT TIM LESTER'S THROAT WITH A KNIFE AT A CHARLESTON APARTMENT COMPLEX IN 2006. LESTER SAID THE ATTACK WAS UNPROVOKED. TODAY ARTHUR CLAIMED LESTER ALSO HAD A KNIFE. "Yes, your honor I'm very remorseful for my actions, for what I did though I believe if Mr. Lester had never pulled a knife on me none of this would have happened. But it still does not excuse my actions." JUDGE JIM STUCKY SENTENCED ARTHUR TO 3-T0-15 YEARS IN PRISON. HE'LL GET CREDIT FOR THE MORE THAN A YEAR HE'S ALREADY SPENT IN JAIL.

21-YEAR-OLD KANITA WITHROW OF CHARLESTON ALLEGEDLY HAD A METH LAB IN THE TRUNK OF HER CAR. SHE WAS PULLED OVER FOR A TRAFFIC VIOLATION AT THE INTERSECTION OF VIRGINIA STREET WEST AND PARK AVENUE EARLY TODAY. SHE'S CHARGED WITH OPERATING A CLANDESTINE DRUG LAB.

SOME SAY DIRECTOR KERRY GATELEY IS PLANNING TO STEP DOWN TODAY IN A PRIVATE MEETING AND THAT DOCTOR STEVEN ARTZ COULD BE A POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT. THE BOARD WILL MEET IN EXECUTIVE SESSION LATER TODAY. THE BOARD AND THE MAYOR HAD BEEN IN A DISPUTE OVER MOVING THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO A NEW LOCATION TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW HOTEL. BUT THE DEAL FELL THROUGH.

THIS MORNING THE MOUNTAIN STATE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD HEALTH BUS STOPPED IN FRONT OF THE OLD COURT HOUSE. FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS WERE GIVEN OUT TO EMPLOYEES -- THE SCREENINGS INCLUDED BLOOD TESTS AS WELL AS BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS AND WEIGHT EXAMS. COUNTY LEADERS HOPE THE SCREENINGS WILL HELP WORKERS MANAGE THEIR HEALTH TO LIVE LONG HAPPY LIVES. SCREENINGS WILL CONTINUE TOMORROW MORNING BEGINNING AT 7 AND CONTINUING UNTIL 10.

NEXT UP FOR THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES PRIMARIES IN KENTUCKY AND OREGON. ACCORDING TO RECENT NATIONAL POLLS, CLINTON IS LEADING OBAMA IN KENTUCKY BY A TWO-TO-ONE MARGIN.
