YOU'RE LOOKING AT VIDEO OF A TREE THAT TOPPLED ONTO POWER LINES ALONG OAKLAND AVENUE. THE STORM CAUSED THE TREE TO ACTUALLY BECOME UPROOTED. POWER CREWS SAY THESE LINES ARE STRESSED FROM THE WEIGHT OF THE TREE AND URGE PEOPLE TO STAY OUT OF THIS AREA UNTIL IT'S FIXED. AND IT'S A SIMILIAR SCENE ALL ACROSS THE REGION...
RUFFNER TREE DOWN
RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF CHARLESTON'S EAST END.
I TORNADO LATEST
EYEWITNESS NEWS CONTRIBUTOR, HUNTER SCOTT HAS THESE AMAZING STORIES OF SURVIVAL.
we grabbed our motor cycle helmets and hid in the closet and prayed like hell and the only room that was spared was the room that we were in
everything else is gone, our kitchen is gone our pantry is gone, everything is gone and we've been there for 21 years
STORIES OF SURVIVAL CONTINUE TO EMERGE... AFTER A MASSIVE TORNADO RIPPED THROUGH MOORE... DESTROYING HUNDREDS OF HOMES... AND LEAVING VICTIMS TRAPPED IN THE RUBBLE.
VICTIMS REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAW AND HEARD... AS THE TORNADO BARRELED OVER THEIR HOMES.
"I heard the roar, I grabbed my dog and went and laid down and here we are now. I mean it's destroyed."
"I was just asking God to spare me and he did. He saw fit to see me through another day."
FAMILIES RECORDED VIDEO... AS THEY CAME OUT OF THEIR STORM SHELTERS... FINDING NEIGHBORHOODS... WIPED TO THE GROUND.
nats home vid: "the lord giveth and the lord taketh away."
VICTIMS RECALL AN EERY SILENCE... AS THE SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS BEGAN.
I got them hollering out, if you can hear me, call out. And we started finding people, we started getting people out. We saw some unfortunate things but we also helped a lot of people. (Sniffs) That's what's important."
MANY VICTIMS... SEEN AS HEROES... INCLUDING SUSANNE HALEY.
THE PICTURE... TOO GRAPHIC TO SHOW (GRAPHIC IS BLURRED A LITTLE

RESCUE WORKERS SAY THEIR WORK... IS FAR FROM OVER.
We will be through every damaged piece of property in this city at least three times before we're done
WHILE VICTIMS SAY IT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO RE-BUILD... THEY SAY THE CITY OF MOORE HAS DONE IT ONCE BEFORE... AND WILL DO IT ONCE AGAIN.
I TORNADO VICTIM
AT LEAST 24 PEOPLE DIED DURING MONDAY'S TORNADO.
NINE CHILDREN ARE AMONG THE DEAD... INCLUDING A NINE-YEAR-OLD GIRL NAMED JA'NAE HORNSBY.
SHE WAS AT PLAZA TOWERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEN THE STORM HIT.
JA'NAE'S FATHER SAYS HE STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THE NEWS.
NO NEW SURVIVORS OR BODIES HAVE BEEN FOUND SINCE THE EARLY HOURS AFTER THE TORNADO HIT MONDAY AFTERNOON.
EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR KALLIE CART JOINS US NOW LIVE WITH REACTION FROM WEST LIBERTY, KENTUCKY.
WEST LIBERTY WAS HIT HARD BY TORNADO ACTIVITY IN MARCH OF 2012...
REPORTER WALK TO BAM
WE WERE THERE TODAY..AND EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN A YEAR THE DAMAGE IS STILL APPARENT.
AS YOU DRIVE THROUGH WEST LIBERTY....THERE ARE VACANT LOTS WHERE BUILDINGS ONCE STOOD, HOUSES WITH MISSING ROOFS AND THE GUTTED SHELL OF A SPRAWLING APARTMENT COMPLEX. THE EMOTIONS ARE STILL THERE TOO. TRIGGERED BY ROUGH WEATHER OR WATCHING OTHERS GO THROUGH WHAT THEY DID ON TELEVISION.
SOME BUSINESSES LIKE THIS ANTIQUE STORE THAT LOST A ROOF AND HALF ITS INVENTORY IN THE TWISTER AND THIS DAIRY BAR THAT WAS LEVELED HAVE BEEN REBUILT. BUT THE STORM HAS LEFT A LOT OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HOLES IN THIS EASTERN KENTUCKY COMMUNITY.

I MINGO FED UPDATE
ONCE AGAIN TODAY -- WE TRIED TO REACH OUT TO MINGO COUNTY'S ONLY JUDGE... SOURCES TELL US THAT HE IS ONE OF THE TARGETS OF A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INVOLVING THE F-B-I, STATE POLICE AND THE U-S ATTORNEYS OFFICE...
BUT TODAY -- ONE DAY AFTER OUR STORY BROKE -- JUDGE MICHAEL THORNSBURY WASN'T AT WORK... A SECRETARY IN HIS OFFICE TELLS US THAT A TRIAL WAS SET FOR TODAY BUT THAT AT THE LAST MINUTE, HE CANCELLED THE TRIAL AND SENT THE JURY HOME.. NO REASON WAS GIVEN... EYEWITNESS NEWS HAS CONFIRMED THROUGH VARIOUS SOURCES THAT HE IS AMONG ELECTED OFFICIALS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ALLEGED ELECTION VIOLATIONS AND OTHER FEDERAL CRIMES.
INDICTMENTS ARE EXPECTED TO COME DOWN IN THIS CASE SOON.
WE ARE CONTINUING TO FOLLOW THIS STORY -- AND WILL BRING YOU THE DETAILS AS THEY BREAK.
MEIGS STANDOFF ENDS
AND IT CAME TO AN END, PEACEFULLY...
80-YEAR-OLD JACK RICHIE, OF CHESTER, IS IN CUSTODY.
OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE CALL YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.
WHEN THEY GOT THERE, RICHIE BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE OF HIS HOME WITH A GUN.
NO ONE WAS INJURED DURING THE STANDOFF... BUT THE ROAD WAS CLOSED DOWN FOR MORE THAN A DAY WHILE POLICE TRIED TO TALK RICHIE OUT OF HIS HOME.
AT THIS TIME, IT IS UNKNOWN IF RICHIE WILL FACE CHARGES.
I WAYNE PUNISHMENT
BUT THE PUNISHMENT IS JUST BEGINNING... EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR DAVE BENTON HAS DETAILS.
AFTER A 2 1/2 HOUR MEETING... THE WAYNE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION DECIDED TO STRIP STUDENTS OF THE RIGHT TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE GRADUATION NIGHT. PARENTS SAY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS FOUGHT FOR THE KIDS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CEREMONY... BUT THE BOARD VOTED AGAINST IT.
LAST WEEK, 20 STUDENTS BROKE INTO THE SCHOOL... SOME OF THEM SMEARED DEER GUTS AND URINE INSIDE THE BUILDING... OTHERS JUST FILLED CUPS OF WATER AND PLACED THEM IN THE HALLWAY.
PLYMALE SAY NO CHARGES WILL BE FILED... IF THEY PAY RESTITUTION AND PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE. SO, ARE THESE KIDS GETTING OFF TOO EASILY... OR IS THE PUNISHMENT DEAD ON. WE TO TOOK THAT QUESTION TO THE STREETS.
SOME STUDENTS HAVE HELPED CLEAN UP THE MESS AND THAT WILL GO TOWARD THEIR COMMUNITY SERVICE... IN WAYNE COUNTY, DAVE BENTON EYEWITNESS NEWS.
GRADUATION AT WAYNE HIGH SCHOOL IS TOMORROW AT 7:00.
BUT YOUR TIPS COULD HELP POLICE TRACK HIM DOWN...

INTRO SOCIAL IMPACT
FROM SUN UP TO SUN DOWN, THEY ARE TURNING TO TECHNOLOGY AS THEIR PRIMARY MEANS OF COMMUNICATION.
EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER DARRAH WILCOX RECENTLY SAT DOWN WITH A GROUP OF TEENS AT HUNTINGTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR AN OPEN DISCUSSION ABOUT SOCIAL NETWORKING... TO FIND OUT HOW THEY USE IT... AND FOR HOW LONG.
When I wake up, I generally check Twitter.
FROM THE MOMENT THEY GO TO BED
What did you miss in your sleep?
TO THE MOMENT THEY WAKE UP....TEENAGERS LIKE LUKE COOLEY SAY THEY ARE CONSTANTLY STRIVING TO STAY CONNECTED THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA.
Whenever I have free time I just check it. A lot. NATS laughter
AND LUKE ISN'T ALONE.WE SAT DOWN WITH HIM AND HIS PEERS TO TRY AND GAUGE JUST HOW DEPENDENT THE AVERAGE TEENAGER IS ON APPLICATIONS LIKE TWITTER AND FACEBOOK..AND WHY?
DEW: From wake-up to go to sleep. What are you on Facebook for?
I'm mostly just checking who I'm friends with is just posting and stuff. I usually just ignore a lot of it.
DEW: In the last year would you say you've ever gone a day without checking social media?
If I'm like camping or something!
TEENS SAY THEY FEEL DISCONNECTED WITHOUT IT.
Do you all remember a world where Facebook and Twitter and all these things didn't exist? Brianna- Yeah when we had Myspace! Laughter
THESE DAYS IT'S NOT JUST FACEBOOK AND TWITTER. INSTAGRAM, PINTEREST, VINE, TUMBLR AND SNAPCHAT ARE ALL OUTLETS TO STAY SOCIALLY NETWORKED.
DEW:Why do you think we live in a world who has to be so connected?
"It's just like a habit now. You can't exactly just stop it."
"I don't think it's like at the point where you can just stop now. It's only going to progress."
"Yeah I think we've gotten used to having everything at our fingertips in such a short amount of time and without it we wouldn't know what to do."
WHAT ARE YOU TWEETING ABOUT? ON AVERAGE... 100,000 TWEETS ARE SENT EACH MINUTE... BUT ACCORDING TO THESE TEENS...
"It's usually pretty pointless
"Yeah if I looked back at all my Tweets they could easily go without it."
GRX on time spent online
BUT TIME SPENT ON THOSE "POINTLESS" POSTS AND PICS AND TWEETS... CERTAINLY ADD UP.
Luke Cooley /
I'd say about three maybe. Laughter. Is that a lot? Yes! Alright... um an hour and forty-five minutes!
ACCORDING TO SOCIALLY ACTIVE DOT COM, 70% OF young adults spend almost 17 hours a week online.
ALLTWITTER SHOWS NEARLY 700,THOUSAND PIECES OF FACEBOOK CONTENT SHARED EACH MINUTE.
AND OF COURSE THERE ARE PITFALLS. NEARLY HALF OF ALL TEENS ON SOCIAL NETWORKS ADMIT TO BEING CYBERBULLIED.
A lot of times I just read by it. Scroll by it. You don't really do anything about it. You just see it.
BUT WHAT STARTS OUT AS JUST A SIMPLE COMMENT OR PICTURE... CAN QUICKLY TURN VIRAL.
"People can take screen shots of it. Someone's always going to find out about it."
AND... IT CAN HAVE DEADLY CONSEQUENCES.
"She was sweet and she was kind"
AUDRIE POTT WAS A CALIFORNIA TEENAGER WHO WAS REPORTEDLY RAPED BY THREE TEEN BOYS, WHO ALLEGEDLY POSTED PICTURES OF THE INCIDENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
POTT COMMITTED SUICIDE A WEEK LATER.
"She's missed every day."
SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK YOUR KIDS QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR SOCIAL NETWORKING LIFE.
"You should also make your child feel comfortable enough so that they can come to you if they see something that they don't like or someone's talking to them in a way they don't like because often people aren't going to find out about it.
WHILE THERE IS A VERY DARK SIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA, TEENS ALSO KNOW THERE ARE PERKS TO POSTING
"Knowing that I was applying to some art schools I was like well if they do check it and I post some of my art on here then that might be cool."
A COMMON HASHTAG CAN UNITE COMMUNITIES AND EVEN THE COUNTRY.
SO, WHILE YOU ARE TWEETING, POSTING AND LIKING AWAY THE MINUTES EACH DAY... DON'T FORGET THE WORLD WIDE WEB DOESN'T HAVE TO BE YOUR WHOLE WORLD.
PARENTS CAN ALSO BE PROACTIVE WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNICATING WITH KID ABOUT SOCIAL NETWORKING.
G EXPERT ADVISE
ALSO- BE OPEN. THE GROUP WE SAT DOWN WITH SAY THEY ARE LISTENING TO THEIR PARENTS! SO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.
REMIND THEM NOT TO SHARE TOO MUCH... WHETHER IT'S A PICTURE, PERSONAL INFORMATION, OR LOCATION-BASED SERVICES.
A GREAT ESCAPE IN JERSEY...
AND A GLUTTONESS GASTRO-INTESTINAL FEAT IN CALIFORNIA ON THIS USA UPDATE
TWO out of the train EARLY THIS MORNING.... It's believed the train was carrying ethanol, SO A hazmat team was scent to the scene... NO WORD YET ON HOW THOSE ENGINEERS ARE DOING TONIGHT...
