CHURCH ON THE STREETS
IF YOU WENT TO CHURCH THIS MORNING... CHANCES ARE YOU SAT IN THE SANCTUARY...

BUT ONE CHURCH IN OUR REGION THOUGHT OUT OF THE BOX....

PASTOR TIM DIXON TOOK THE SERVICE OUTSIDE... AND HE PREACHED FROM ABOVE... LITERALLY. TAKE A LOOK.

A TYPICAL SUNDAY AT MOST CHURCHES BEGINS AND ENDS IN THE SANCTUARY... BUT TIM DIXON, THE PASTOR AT FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IN HUNTINGTON - - WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO DELIVER HIS MESSAGE.

TERRY COLLISON-14:14-IT'S PRETTY AMAZING KNOWING HE'S AFRAID OF HEIGHTS AND HE MADE IT.

DIXON CLIMBED UP INTO THE STEEPLE TO DELIVER HIS SERMON WITH A BULL-HORN IN HAND. QUITE THE SIGHT TO SEE - - ESPECIALLY FOR PASSERSBY.

DIXON EXPLAINS WHY HE DECIDED TO DO THIS.

DIXON SAYS THE CHURCH IS A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO GO AND BE HEALED... BUT ALL TOO OFTEN IT'S CAUSED PEOPLE PAIN AND REJECTION... ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE NOT IN CERTAIN CATEGORIES. FIRST CHURCH IS KNOWN FOR BEING VERY PROGRESSIVE... AND NOW MEMBERS ARE GOING OUT MORE INTO THE COMMUNITY.

DIXON-17:50-THE STEEPLE WAS DIND OF A COOL THING IT'S 140 YEARS IN THE MAKING. NOONE'S EVER PREACHED FROM OUR STEEPLE. IT HAS WOOD IN IT FROM THE ORGINAL STEEPLE. GOOD WAY TO SEND MESSAGE JUST NOT TO OUR CHURCH, BUT OUR WHOLE CITY.

ANOTHER REASON PASTOR DIXON PREACHED FROM THE STEEPLE - - TO GET MORE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN CHURCH.

AND... NOT A BAD GIMMICK EITHER... AS SOME PEOPLE WOULD SAY... WHATEVER IT TAKES.

ANTIVACCINE TREND
A GROWING TREND AMONG CHILDREN... AND IT ISN'T A GOOD ONE.. HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE SEEING HIGHER OUTBREAKS OF DISEASES THAT SHOULD BE CONTROLLED BY IMMUNIZATIONS.

A SCAREY NEW REALITY AS MORE AND MORE PARENTS ARE DELAYING OR REFUSING TO VACCINATE THEIR CHILDREN...AND THAT IS PUTTING ALL CHILDREN IN MORE DANGER.

"There is no stronger way we can express how important immunizations are..."

PARENTS OF CLEMSON ELEMENTARY STUDENTS FOUND OUT YESTERDAY THAT THEIR KIDS HAD BEEN EXPOSED TO WHOOPING COUGH DURING THE FIRST 10 DAYS OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.

"Do we know if this child had been immunized against pertussis?"

"Because of health care privacy laws, I can't discuss it.

AND THOUGH MOST PARENTS DO IT AND IT'S THE LAW....

"Over 99% of students are immunized."

    THERE ARE STILL EXCEPTIONS.

"At this point I got an exemption because I don't believe in it."

HEIDI HENRY IS A FORMER NURSE, AND PARENT OF A MIDDLE SCHOOLER.

SHE IS GETTING AN EXEMPTION FROM THE NEW 7TH GRADE BOOSTER REQUIREMENT THAT PROTECTS AGAINST TETANUS, DIPTHERIA AND PERTUSSIS.

"Some research that autism...and also a friend whose child who directly related to a vaccination was not able to walk and he's been unable to walk since that point.

BUT DOCTORS AND HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THOSE LINKS ARE UNFOUNDED.

    Dr. Michelle Viglianco / Pediatrician

"it's refuted by anyone whose done any good science on it, multiple studdies since then looking at population of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children, no difference in rates of autism"

    "...no verbatims"

BUT THE DATA SHOW THAT PARENTS FEARS ARE HAVING A DANGEROUS IMPACT ON ALL CHILDREN.

THE NUMBER OF CASES OF WHOOPING COUGh ARE UP OVER 500% IN THE LAST 20 YEARS...TO RATES NOT SEEN IN OVER 50 YEARS.

"The danger in that is, the more you don't vaccinate, more kids get it ..."

DOCTORS HAVE SAID FEARS ABOUT VACCINATIONS COME FROM A GOOD PLACE, WITH PARENTS WHO DON'T WANTTO HURT THEIR CHILDREN...BUT THEY CAUTION THERE'S STILL *NO SOLID* DATA TO SUGGEST THERE ARE BENEFITS TO *NOT VACCINATING YOUR KIDS.
