June 4, 1987 - WCHS Breaks Ground On Piedmont Road Studio
By Heath Harrison
May 5, 2013

We have two topics for this week’s installment:

First is a video from the June 4, 1987 groundbreaking of WCHS’s studio at 1301 Piedmont Rd. in
Charleston. Before the current studio was constructed, the TV station was located at 1101 Virginia Street E., where it shared a facility with WCHS radio.

Both the TV and radio station were owned by Rollins Telecasting at the time. Rollins sold the radio station when it merged with Heritage Media, and, despite having the same call letters, the two are no longer affiliated.

WCHS TV is now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and shares studios with WVAH at the Piedmont Road location.

The video contains a report by Alan Cohen from the groundbreaking and features several familiar faces from the station’s past.

Our next offering probably predates even the oldest readers of this feature, but maybe you’ve heard stories about it over the years.

Below is a 1914 photo of Luna Park, a seven-acre amusement park that used to occupy the north bank of Kanawha River on Charleston’s West Side.

Bordered by Park and Glenwood avenues, Park Drive, and Grant Street, the park featured a merry-go-round, ferris wheel, zoo, skating rink, boxing rink and the park’s star attraction, the Royal Giant Dips Coaster.

Today marks 90 years since a May 5, 1923 fire completely destroyed the park 11 years after it opened.

Housing eventually replaced the park, and the curving nature of streets in the area is due to the fact that they were built on Luna Park’s old layout.
