Cristobal could bring needed rain
July 19, 2008 7:08 PM

CHARLESTON, S.C.
Forecasters say Tropical Storm Cristobal is churning off the Southeast seaboard about 125 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour and is moving northeast at about 7 miles per hour.

The first storm of the hurricane season to threaten the U.S. could bring some much needed rain to the parched eastern Carolinas.

There are coastal flood advisories, and forecasters predict up to 5 inches of rain along the North Carolina coast, with even higher amounts in some areas.

Although the center of the storm is forecast to remain off the coast through the weekend, tropical storm warnings are in effect from the South Santee River in South Carolina to the North Carolina-Virginia state line. That includes Pamlico Sound.
