U.S. NATIONAL NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Tropical Storm Cristobal rumbles off the Carolinas July 20, 2008 3:08 AM CHARLESTON, S.C. There could be a big upside from the first tropical storm of the Atlantic season to affect the U.S. Parts of drought-stricken North Carolina could get up to five inches of rain. Tropical Storm Cristobal has moved within 35 miles of Cape Fear, North Carolina, this morning with winds of about 45 miles-an-hour. National Hurricane Center forecaster Martin Nelson says it's basically running parallel to the coast. And he looks for Cristobal to slowly strengthen over the next day or two. Carolina beaches were already getting some rain yesterday, but not enough to chase vacationers away. The manager of the By-The-Sea-Motel in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, says visitors are hoping to get some snapshots of lightning over the water. Meantime the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, Hurricane Bertha, has been downgraded to a tropical storm. It'll be going into the record books as the longest-lived July storm in history. |
