Jury finds ranch negligent in 10-death landslide
August 20, 2008 8:57 AM

VENTURA, Calif.
A jury has ruled that a ranch company's negligence helped lead to the 2005 landslide that killed 10 people in a community on California's central coast.

The slide destroyed 13 homes and damaged 23 others in the seaside community of La Conchita 70 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

A Ventura County jury found on Tuesday that the La Conchita Ranch Company did not build a sufficient drainage system, which it said could have helped prevent the January 2005 slide that followed fierce storms.

The jury spent more than an hour giving all its findings in the case which had 36 plaintiffs including property owners and relatives of victims.

The jury exonerated ranch manager David Orr and Ventura County, saying they were not negligent.
