U.S. NATIONAL NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online System off Southeast coast could develop into tropical storm July 19, 2008 7:54 AM CHARLESTON, S.C. A storm off the Southeast coast that's sent heavy rain into Georgia and South Carolina has developed into a tropical depression. The storm is sitting about 45 miles southeast of Charleston and is moving northeast at five miles-per-hour. Its maximum winds are near 30 miles-per-hour with higher gusts. Forecasters say it could strengthen into a tropical storm today. The National Hurricane Center has issued tropical storm warnings and watches along the coast of the Carolinas. A National Weather Service meteorologist says even if the storm gets worse, it won't cause many problems. He says it could bring occasional showers and thundershowers, some heavy at times. If the system develops into a tropical storm, it would be named Cristobal, the third storm of the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane season big enough to rate a name. |
