Death penalty avoided in social worker death July 18, 2008 6:48 PM
HENDERSON, Ky.
A Henderson newspaper is reporting that 24-year-old Christopher Luttrell pleaded guilty but mentally ill to aggravated murder and other charges Friday in the 2006 death of social service aide Boni Frederick.
The Gleaner says Luttrell's guilty plea means he has avoided the death penalty. Instead, his maximum sentence would be life imprisonment without parole.
The 67-year-old Frederick, a Morganfield resident, died after being stabbed and beaten when she took an infant boy for a visit at his mother's house in Henderson.
Luttrell's sentencing date is Aug. 25.
Frederick's death lead to new legislation last year to hire additional state social workers and improve their safety.
