KENTUCKY NEWS
from Eyewitness News Online Bowie seeks entry into exclusive country club November 20, 2009 10:15 AM LEXINGTON, Ky.
Former college and professional basketball player Sam Bowie is looking to crack into another exclusive club. The former University of Kentucky star has applied for membership in Lexington's Idle Hour Country Club. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the country club has never had a black member. Bowie tells the newspaper that he approached Idle Hour and expects to hear soon whether he's been accepted. He's bracing for critics to say he would be a "token" member allowed in to end criticism of the club for having no black members. But Bowie says he wants in because his family has friends there and he's an avid golfer. Idle Hour officials said in 2006 that they were willing to have black members but that none had applied. In 1993, Bowie became the first black member of Lexington Country Club on Paris Pike. Information from: Lexington Herald-Leader, http://www.kentucky.com |
