Beshear says tells residents casino issue not dead
July 18, 2008 12:26 PM

Governor Steve Beshear says legalizing casinos remains a possibility in Kentucky even though lawmakers rejected the idea earlier this year.

Beshear was in the eastern Kentucky town of Virgie on Thursday night for his first in a series of town hall meetings over the next five weeks. He told the audience of 400 people that he doesn't think the casino gambling issue is dead.

The governor said he is traveling the state to listen to Kentuckians' suggestions on how state government can continue to provide services under tight budget constraints. The state faces a 900-million-dollar revenue shortfall over the next two years.

Residents who spoke at the meeting urged the governor to concentrate his efforts on creating jobs, building highways, fighting drug abuse and improving education. The next town hall meeting is Monday in Somerset.
