MU Food Pantry Opens
February 21, 2014

Eyewitness News Reporter Darrah Wilcox The Herd is helping the hungry.

"The last thing that any of us want to see is anybody going without food. It shouldn't be in today's world, said Elizabeth Sheets, director of the new food pantry at Marshall University.

The pantry for Marshall students and their families opened this week. "Food is what keeps us all going, and you can't go to class hungry, and concentrate and do well," said Sheets.

Hunger is an issue that affects 1 in 6 people in the U.S. Pantry organizers say with the combination of tough economic times and rising higher educations costs, the need for a pantry became evident. "We're very aware of that and you end up with a lot of students are just struggling, particularly by the end of the month of the end of the semester," said dean of students Steve Hensley.

President Stephen Kopp called the food pantry a safety net for students. "I think that's a very important message to send to our students is that we as a university community care about them deeply and we want them to succeed and we certainly don't want them to go hungry," he said.

Several university departments have donated food and money, and now the shelves are stocked.

"If you look around the pantry, everything is pretty nutritious, and I'm glad to see that, because we want people to have good food," said Sheets.

They've worked with the department of dietetics to distribute nutritional information to students who use the pantry. Hensley said, "We're committed not only to give people food but also helping them eat good things."

They are fighting hunger and staying healthy one donation at a time.

The pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday.

If you want to donate food, the Alumni Association is holding a food drive that will run through the end of the month. You can drop off canned goods and non-perishable items, and donations can be made during regular business hours at the Erickson Alumni Center, located at the MU Foundation Hall.
