Car Seat Checks
August 30, 2013

Eyewitness News Reporter Darrah Wilcox It's the most important step you can take to make sure your child is protected in a car crash, but you may be surprised to find out more than 70 percent of child safety seat are installed incorrectly.

The most common mistake is not making the car seat tight enough.

When you're selecting a safety seat, you need to make sure it fits proper weight and height requirements.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children rear-face until at least two years old.

Keep the harness clip at armpit level.

Booster seats also need to be used until a child is 8 years old or 4'9". Experts say the safest place for kids younger than 13 is the back seat.

Other important safety issues, never buy a car seat secondhand. You don't know the history of the seat, like if it's been in a crash. Also, don't add aftermarket items, like extra padding or bunting underneath the straps.

Don't get complacent, no matter how short your trip in the car is.
