Flying More Money

It might seem hard to believe, but the Transportation Security Administration has only been around for 13 years. The TSA is largely funded by a $5 fee travelers pay each time they fly, and that fee is now going up.

"It's disappointing to see the cost of the TSA tax is going up," Jason Castle, who was flying to Jacksonville, said.

The tax is only going up 60 cents, but the total amount you pay could double, due to the way TSA is implementing the tax.

"They're interpreting connecting flights to be a different flight, and they say that's how the legislation is written," Yeager Airport director Rick Atkinson said.

Previously, flyers paid the $5 tax only once. Now, they are going to be paying the $5.60 tax for almost every connecting flight. Atkinson said this tax hike is going to almost double the security agency's revenue, but the TSA will not see the majority of that money.

Money coming from this fee increase will actually help pay down the massive $17 trillion national debt.

"The tax unjustly affects smaller cities and smaller airports because of having fewer non-stop flights," Castle said.

But not everyone at Yeager airport thinks this is a bad idea, insisting that the tax affects all incomes and is helping pay the country's bills.

"I can think of a couple more good items like that, that want lower, middle, and high income brackets to work solely for that, put the money nowhere else just solely towards the national debt. I think that’s a great idea," Brian Broussard, a man dropping his family off at the airport, said.

The tax increase is going to start next week, and the fees can rack up until you hit a cap at $22.40.
