Highway crews have reopened a westbound exit and entrance ramp at the Nitro exit off Interstate 64 after a semi-truck rolled twice, damaging two guardrails and spilling fuel and oil.
The crash happened about 1:25 a.m. Thursday. Emergency officials said the driver fell asleep at the wheel. He rolled his truck through two guardrails. Witnesses told emergency officials the passenger was ejected from the truck. The driver and passenger were seen walking around the crash scene when emergency crews pulled up. They were taken to the hospital and were in stable condition.
Fire officials said the tractor-trailer was hauling three transformers, weighing 12,500 pounds each. Those flew off the truck during the crash and leaked about 300 gallons of mineral oil, a nonhazardous material. Between 75 and 100 gallons of diesel fuel also leaked out of the truck after the accident.
Emergency officials had the ramps closed for about five hours Thursday morning, so they could clean up the mess. They spread sand on the entrance ramp to soak up the mineral oil because they were concerned it could cause slick conditions on the interstate.
Emergency officials said they will close the entrance ramp after noon Thursday, so crews can remove the transformers. The guardrail also will have to be replaced, but crews haven't given a time frame for when that will happen.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 and all of Route 25 are shut down as firefighters and police work to clear the road, after a tractor-trailer dumped its load.
It happened about 1:45 a.m. Thursday as the tractor-trailer was getting off of the interstate at the westbound Nitro exit.
The truck plowed through two sets of guardrails before coming to a stop at a third guardrail.
An emergency responder said that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The driver of the truck and a passenger were taken to the hospital. They are in stable condition.
The truck was carrying generators that scattered across the road when the truck jackknifed.
A hazardous materials crew also was called to clean a diesel spill on the roads and median.
