Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

Democrat Nick Casey announced Thursday the formation of a Republicans for Casey organization, including the endorsements of several Republican figures from Kanawha County.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones and Charleston City Council President Tom Lane led the list of Republicans endorsing Casey’s bid for West Virginia’s 2nd District U.S. House seat.

Others on the list included former president of the West Virginia Board of Education Priscilla Haden, former Arch Moore administration official and Charleston attorney Ben Bailey, former Del. Marc Harman and former Charleston councilman Ted Armbrecht.

Casey, a Charleston attorney, served as chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party from 2004 to 2010.

“Since the primary, I’ve been humbled by the outpouring of support from respected Republicans from all around the second district who have offered to help my campaign in some way,” Casey said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Casey’s Republican opponent Alex Mooney has been elevated to “Young Guns” status by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

Young Guns candidates are considered the top tier prospects by the National NRCC. Mooney was chosen, along with 10 other candidates this week to be added to the roster.

“Candidates that reach ‘Young Gun’ status have met a series of rigorous goals that will put them in position to win on Election Day,” NRCC Chairman Greg Walden said in a news release.

State Sen. Evan Jenkins, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall in the state’s 3rd Congressional District, also was named to the list earlier this year.

Mooney, who served as a state senator and Republican chairman in Maryland, moved to West Virginia in 2013 to run for U.S. House.

Casey and Mooney are running for the seat being vacated by Republican Shelley Moore Capito, who is running for U.S. Senate. Mountain Party candidate and former CBS journalist Ed Rabel and Libertarian Party candidate Davy Jones are also seeking the seat.
