POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (Darrah Wilcox, Jeff Morris, Dave Benton) -- Emergency crews will resume the search Thursday morning in the Ohio River for a vehicle that reportedly plunged into the water near Point Pleasant.
Windy conditions and the murky water were making it difficult to conduct the search Tuesday.
Boats and a dive team were called to the area to search after a tugboat operator reported seeing a vehicle go into the river about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Police don't believe anyone was in the car when it apparently plunged into the water. Local residents are hoping for the best outcome.
"I hope they find the car and it's empty and whoever was in it was safe," Cheryl Whitt of Point Pleasant said.
Police said there was a report of a stolen silver sport utility vehicle, but it's not confirmed whether it's the same vehicle spotted in the river.
Christina Brock lives in Point Pleasant and said she heard about the missing SUV.
"It was funny we already heard the story about the lady getting her vehicle stolen. Then, we heard about the one in the river and wondered if it was the same one or not," Brock said.
Crews will resume the search at 9 a.m. Thursday with a special dive team and equipment.
