CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Kera Mashek) -- Lawmakers approved a one-time, across-the-board pay raise of $1,000 for public school teachers on Saturday.

School service personnel will also get a two percent pay increase.

Many legislators are hoping this is just the first step in establishing a $43,000 dollar starting salary for teachers within the next five years.

West Virginia AFT pushed for the pay raises, which will cost the state a total of almost $40 million.

Workers making minimum wage in the Mountain State will also be seeing a little more money in their paychecks.

A measure approved by lawmakers will bring up the minimum wage by $1.50 over the next three years.

That brings the minimum wage up to $7.50 in January of next year, $8 by January 2016 and $8.75 by 2017.
