CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons, Doug Harlow, AP) With bitter cold temperatures being forecast for much of the Eyewitness News viewing area, many of West Virginia's county school systems have canceled class for Monday.

The Department of Education's website showed six other counties have delayed the start of classes.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service reported temperatures in the 20s across the state Monday morning and light snow or flurries in some areas. Wind chill warnings have been issued for most of the state, effective Monday evening when temperatures are expected to drop to single digits. Some areas could see wind chills of minus 30 degrees or lower Monday night.

Eyewitness News Storm Team Meteorologist Doug Harlow said that beginning at 2 a.m. Monday, temperatures across the region would fall at a rate of between 5 and 10 degrees every hour. Harlow said toward sunrise, roads would ice up and a quick 1 to 3 inches of wind-blown dry snow would fall.

Motorists were urged to use extra caution if they had to travel, due to the fact that the falling temperatures would cause wet roads to ice up. Blustery winds Monday into Tuesday will cause extreme low wind chills.

Harlow said expected wind chills across the area would be downright dangerous Monday afternoon - with Charleston feeling like -22, Huntington at -21 and Lewisburg at a feel of -32.

Meantime, 911 dispatchers in Putnam County said the entire town of Winfield was without power early Monday. The county's 911 center was operating on a generator. Power was expected to be restored about 11:30 a.m.

Thousands more West Virginians were without power Monday. Appalachian Power reported about 6,000 West Virginians to be in the dark about 7:30 a.m. Counties with the highest outage totals included Putnam County with 1,789, Kanawha County with 1,777 and Lincoln County with 820.

Those numbers do change often and you're encouraged to log on to the Appalachian Power website for the very latest outage updates.
