CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris) -- Amnesty has been granted – by the Charleston Winter Series.

Due to the adverse weather of the first race, the series no longer is requiring everyone to participate in all three events to receive the specially designed hoodie. For $40, you can register for the final two events and receive the hoodie, although your finish will not be counted in the overall results. Online registration is closed, and you must register the day of the race on Sunday at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Kanawha City.

The next event in the three-event series is scheduled Sunday, Jan. 5, with a 4,000-meter (2.4 miles) walk at 1 p.m. and an 8,000-meter (4.9 mile) run at 2 p.m.

The flat, easy course is marked and starts at 31st Street and Virginia Avenue in Kanawha City and continues onto Kanawha Avenue before finishing in the same location. Traffic control will be provided at major intersections.

Same day registration for each event is $20.

Participants in the Winter Series not only do something great for their health, but they receive a few perks. In the first two runs, awards will be presented to the top male and female and in the following age divisions – 14 and under; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and over; and wheelchair. After the third race, awards will be presented in the same categories based on cumulative times for all three races.

No age group awards will be offered for the walks, but the top three males and females will win awards in the first two races with awards presented in the same categories after the third race based on cumulative times for all three events.

Meanwhile, the final event in the series is Sunday, Feb. 2, with a 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) walk at 1 p.m. and 10,000-meter (6.2 miles) run at 2 p.m.

Sponsors of the Winter Series are WCHS TV, the city of Charleston, the Tallman Track Club and Robert’s Running & Walking Shop.
