For the 17th year, the Contemporary Youth Arts Company brings the nine months before the birth of Christ to the stage in the original rock opera, "Mary."

Written and directed by Dan Kehde, with music by Mark Scarpelli, the musical takes a close look at the young mother-to-be as she struggles with the reality of a virgin birth.

"Nothing says the Christmas season like 'Mary,'" Daniel Calwell (Joseph) said. "This is how I know. This show always tells me that it's time to get into the holiday spirit."

Mary is set to wed Joseph, an older man whose faith is shaken by the news his intended is pregnant. But he leans on his faith and stays by her side as they prepare for the arrival of the son of God.

"Every time you do a show, especially one that happens every year, it's always different," Calwell said. "It's always different people. And I think that over the four years that I've done it's just been increasingly getting better every year."

After spending nearly two decades on stage, "Mary" has been tweaked and changed a bit over the years. But its creators say the message remains the same.

"It' so different every year," Rowan Maher (Mary) said. "It's nice to see what Dan and Mark and like the different casts do with the production every year because it's never, ever the same. It's always changing and growing and it's beautiful."
