Next week, many of us will gather around the table and enjoy some Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings.

But across West Virginia, many families are wondering where their next meal will come from.

That's why charity organizations are coming together to feed the need.

Hundreds turned out to the Bible Center Church in Charleston on Saturday for Union Misson's Thanksgiving food distribution.

The mission expects to feed more than 40,000 people this holiday season.

"It's really exciting, because we know there's a lot of needy families, in fact a lot of hurting families,” Union Mission President Rex Whiteman said. “With the economy in West Virginia, particularly with the mining industry is really suffering right now. We're excited that we can do this. We're thankful for all those who make it possible.”

Six churches around the Kanawha Valley volunteered time to hand out the turkey and chicken, potatoes, bread and canned goods.

"It’s just something that makes you feel good, and something that not only will let you feel good, but will let other people feel good, knowing that they have food for the holidays," volunteer Corey Peters said.

Next up for the Union Mission, "The Tower of Toys," which Eyewitness News, and our friends at the Wolf radio, are proud to partner with.

You're invited to drop off new, unwrapped toys, starting one week from Monday, Dec. 2 through Dec. 13.

Items will be collected at the Charleston and Huntington studios of WCHS/WVAH.
