Hurricane , Putnam County , West Virginia
Darlene Swain has lived in Hurricane for seven years, and she's now raising two children here.
"The small town lifestyle is what attracted us to Hurricane," she said.
Hurricane is earning some bragging rights in the state after Nerdwallet.com recently named it the second best town in West Virginia for small families, right behind Bridgeport.
"It's definitely a great place to raise a family." Swain said.
The website recently released the survey results based on academic performance, affordability of homes and if the town is growing and prospering.
Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said there is a strong sense of community.
"A lot of activities go on in Hurricane, which is good for the families," he said. "A lot of sports, a lot of arts, a lot of those types of things happen, so it brings people together. It let families do things with one another, and I think that's very important."
Tina McCallister has raised three girls in Hurricane. She recently decided it's not only a great place to raise her kids, but also start a business.
"We are a family owned business," she said. "It's family who works here. It's just me and my girls and my husband, all of us."
She recently opened Hattie's Country Restaurant on Main Street.
"I just kind of came and started cooking like I cook at home," she said.
It's a home-cooked meal with a small-town feel that more and more families are calling home.
Nitro and Sissonville also made the top ten list from our area.
