An alleged thief has nothing to show for his crimes, except for some bumps and bruises after police say he messed with the wrong homeowner.
It all ended with a call to police from that homeowner and his friend, saying they had beaten up the suspect and were holding him until police could come and get him.
Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies say 21-year-old Matthew Martin of Charleston first stole a truck and a Play Station 3 from a man whom he was staying with. But that stolen truck broke down on Giles Hollow, which is just off of Cabin Creek.
Deputies say that's when Martin went to the nearest home looking for another ride, breaking in around 4:30 Tuesday morning. Martin got away with several credit cards, another gaming system and keys to a car. That's when the homeowner woke up.
Jason Beverly says he heard Martin trying to get away in his girlfriend's car, problem was, the suspect didn't know how to drive a standard and got stuck in a creek at the end of Beverly's driveway.
Beverly pulled Martin out of the car and started beating him up, his friend then came to help hold him until police arrived.
"I worked to get that stuff and I wasn't going to let it go willingly," Beverly said. "I caught him in the car and I thought he was going to get away with it so I punched him and pulled him out."
Martin has been charged with two counts of grand larceny, petit larceny and nighttime burglary. He's been arrested before for transferring and receiving stolen property and for possession of drugs with the intent to deliver.
A Charleston man faces charges after deputies said he tried to steal a vehicle and items from a residence before he was chased down by the homeowner and detained until law enforcement arrived.
Matthew Aaron Martin, 21, of South Homewood Drive will be charged with two counts of grand larceny, one count of burglary and petit larceny, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said Martin was walking along Giles Hollow Road early Tuesday morning when he came upon a home with an unlocked front door. He entered the house and stole keys and credit cards from a purse, a digital camera, another video game system and a laptop, the news release said. The residents were awakened by the sounds the suspect was making in the home and they confronted him. One of the residents, Jason Beverly, stopped the suspect from fleeing the area, deputies said.
An ambulance from the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority was called to treat minor injuries that Martin received. He was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital.
Deputies said Martin had been in the area because he needed a place to stay and asked a friend in Cabin Creek if he could stay with him for the night. During the night, the release said, he allegedly stole his friend’s vehicle and his friend’s children’s video game system. The vehicle broke down on Giles Hollow Road, where deputies said Martin started walking and entered Beverly’s home.
Martin, who is currently on bond for transferring and receiving stolen property, was scheduled to be arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
